Laugh At The Fakes – One Night Only
Laugh At The Fakes is an unsigned band from Toronto and right from the first few seconds I am digging “One Night Only” really hard. You guys need to get signed and distributed like right now. I want more of this. Let me count the ways that I love Laugh At The Fakes.
First of all, the band name is awesome. I’m generally pretty tired of band names that ramble on for more than two words, but this one is just so funny I have to love it. I’ve certainly laughed at the fakes before so this amuses me greatly.
My next reason for loving these guys is the sound quality and production on “One Night Only”; it sounds great, it sounds professional; it sounds like they are already signed to a good label. I can hear all the instruments and they sound like they have room to breathe. The vocals are clean, clear and the focus of the songs making them very listenable. For some reason I picture them rocking out in a big white empty room. I guess it’s that feeling of open space in the mix. Kudos on production.
Now how about the songs themselves? Well, back to those first few seconds. The crisp guitar riff paired with the drums that start “Again and Again” immediately had me thinking this should be something off Megadeth’s “Rust in Peace”. In fact, Everett Mason sings in a higher voice that cuts nicely through the music and makes me think that if Dave Mustaine actually sang with a clear voice rather than snarled he might even sound like this. (Sorry Dave, you know I love you right? The snarl is good lol) But seriously, great voice, great vocals. Don’t leave this review thinking this is a Megadeth clone though; the rest of the album isn’t very Megadeth at all. In fact, the last song on the album, “Laugh the Day Away”, is an acoustic song.
I also don’t want to give the impression that this is a thrash album. It certainly has thrash elements in the music, but it is also very melodic both in the music and the vocals. It’s like they are a hard rock band that likes to explore their thrashy-side too. I love it because I enjoy the catchy melodic vocals but at the same time I can bang my head pretty seriously too. You don’t hear albums like this one very often, if at all. I can’t really think of anything that comes close to being like this album as a whole.
As it turns out there are only six songs on “One Night Only”. I wish there were more. I hope they are busy writing more songs for a longer album. And I hope that album will come out on a label that will distribute them far and wide. I know I’ll be recommending this one to anyone that will listen. Seriously, check these guys out.
